Winford Legate

August 3, 1935 — February 27, 2014

Winford “Win” C. Legate, 78, of Cambridge, died Thursday, February 27, 2014, in the emergency room of Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 4th, at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services.  Rev. Kenneth Muck will officiate.  Burial will at Rosedale Cemetery, Cambridge.  Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the Cambridge Ambulance Service or the Cambridge Food Pantry.

Winford was born August 3, 1935 in Hermon, Illinois, the son of Joseph and Alma Bramlett Legate.  He was educated in Alexis area schools and graduated from Alexis High School in 1953.  He attended Western Illinois University in Macomb and graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign, receiving both his bachelor and master degrees.  His marriage to Sallie L. Anderson took place on July 26, 1957 in Alexis.

He started out teaching agriculture in Port Byron.  Win then taught elementary school at Briar Bluff for two years before becoming the school superintendant.  When the school closed, he filled in as a teacher at several area schools.  Win also sold insurance and later formed Legate Real Estate.  He enjoyed playing cards with his friends.

Those surviving are his wife, Sallie, a daughter, Wynne Legate, Cambridge, two sons, Mark Legate, Ballwin, MO, Bruce Legate, Cambridge, three grandchildren, Cory (Jessica) Legate, Cambridge, Renee Legate, Peoria, Reva Legate, Moline, and a great granddaughter, Nicole Legate.  Other survivors include a sister, Reta (Donald) Shinn, Abingdon, and a brother, Ronald (Carol) Legate, Galesburg.  His parents and an infant sister preceded him in death.
