Violet H. “Vi” Poppleton, 84, of Macomb, formerly of Canton, died Sunday, April 4, 2010, at the Elms Nursing Home, Macomb, IL. Cremation had taken place. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 17th, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 717 Chambers St., Ottawa, IL. A graveside inurnment service will be held at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon at Rosedale Cemetery, Cambridge. Stackhouse-Moore, Cambridge, is assisting the family with local arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Violet H. Poppleton Scholarship at Western Illinois University or to the Alzeheimer’s Foundation.
The former Violet Glaznap was born October 20, 1925 in Oconomowoc, WI, the daughter of Otto and Alvina (Luedtke) Glaznap. She married William B. Poppleotn on October 20, 1945. He died January 4, 2005. Vi was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, a dedicated volunteer and an accomplished musician. In Danville, IL she was a member of the Danville Junior Women’s Club, the Canasta Club, the Danville Community Concert Board, the St. James Methodist Church choir, and served as the president of the Northridge PTA.
In Canton she was a member of the Canton Women’s Club, Rotary Anns, and Methodist Women, and she served on both the Campfire Board and the Community Concert Series Board. She also served as the Graham Hospital Auxiliary president and sang in the Wesley United Methodist Church choir. She was a volunteer with the YMCA pre-school and sang with the YMCA Barbershop Y-Tones quartet. A talented vocalist, she performed regularly with her own show, “the Maturity of a Woman,” and played the role of Mother Superior in the Fulton County Playhouse production of “A Sound of Music.” She also toured Europe with the Catalina United Methodist Church choir of Tucson, AZ.
She is survived by one son Terry (Sharon) of Glen Ellyn, IL; two daughters Nancy (Ray) Krey of Macomb, and Jill (Mark) Zeitlin of Ottawa, IL; one daughter-in-law Juanita of McPherson, KS; six grandchildren Matt (Kristen) Poppleton of St. Paul, MN, Laura (Alec Berman) Krey of New York, NY, Adam Zeitlin of Chicago, IL, Kelli (Luke) Johnson of Addison, IL, Keith Krey of North Hollywood, CA, and Janine (Marc Damon) Zeitlin of Estero, FL; and three great-grandchildren Rachel and Will Poppleton of St. Paul, MN and Jacob Johnson of Addison, IL. Her parents, her husband, a son, Hal, and a brother, Milton, preceded her in death.
