Vernon L. Steffen, 90, of Cambridge, died Saturday, October 23, 2010, at Hillcrest Home, rural Geneseo. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Cambridge Lutheran Church. Rev. Dawn Keenan will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Cambridge. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services. Memorials may be made to the Cambridge Lutheran Church.
Vernon was born June 3, 1920 in Osco Township, Henry County, Illinois, the son of Ernest L. and Emma L. Fredell Steffen. He was educated in the Orion area and graduated from Orion High School in 1938. His marriage to Ruth Johnson took place on February 10, 1946 in the Cambridge Lutheran parsonage.
The couple farmed in the Osco and Cambridge area until retiring in 1978. Vernon also worked for the Henry County Highway Department, retiring from there in 1986. His memberships include the Henry County Farm Bureau and the Cambridge Lutheran Church. He enjoyed bowling, golf, playing cards, and attending his grandsons’ sporting events.
Those surviving are his wife, Ruth, a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Robert Gushanas, Colona, a son and daughter-in-law, David and Sherry Steffen, LaPorte City, IA, four grandsons, Erik (Hollie) Gushanas, Davenport, Cory (Amy) Gushanas, Noblesville, IN, Kale (Stacy) Steffen, Palmento, FL, and Brett (Kristen) Steffen, Bradenton, FL. Other survivors include seven great grandchildren, Cameron, Kaden, Chase, and Ella Steffen, Shawna Sweetman, Delaney and Kennedy Gushanas, and two step great grandchildren, Mason and Delanie Lantz, two sisters, Dorothy Carlson, Galesburg, and Jeannette (Marvin) Medley, Woodhull. His parents and five brothers preceded him in death.
