Sue Hepner, 63, of Keithsburg, formerly of Galva, died Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria. Cremation has been accorded and a graveside inurnment service will be held at a later date. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, October 1st, at the Galva Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services. Memorials may be made to a Volunteer Ambulance Service or a Humane Society of the donor’s choice.

Mary Susan Townsend was born November 11, 1947 in Kewanee, the daughter of John I. and Frances L. Dukey Townsend. She was educated in Galva Schools and attended Black Hawk College, Kewanee, and Carl Sandburg Junior College, Galesburg. Her marriage to John R. Sanquist took place on Oct. 25, 1964 in Galva. They were divorced. She married Jerry S. Hepner on April 25, 1969 in Galesburg. He is deceased. She was a native of Galva and had lived in Alpha, Williamsfield, and Keithsburg.


Sue was a CPR instructor and held an original registry as an Emergency Medical Technician since the early 1970’s. She was a volunteer with the Galva Ambulance Service and the Tri-County Ambulance Service for many years. Sue worked from 1975 to 2003 in the health care field before retiring due to ill health. Her last employment was at Trinity Family Medical in Cambridge as a medical technician. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren.


Those surviving are three daughters, Rita (Bruce) Retherford, Aledo, Patricia (Ryan) Smith, Williamsfield, Holly Hepner, Galesburg, a son, Jerry (Jenni) Hepner, Dixon, IL, grandchildren, Kristin Retherford, Astoria, IL, Nathan and Nicholas Retherford, both of Aledo, Alex (Amanda) Yerkey, Williamsfield, Lindsey Mandrick, Williamsfield, Bryce Smith, Williamsfield, and Carly Hepner, Dixon, and a great granddaughter, Cameron Yerkey, Williamsfield. Other survivors include a stepdaughter, Julie (Mike) Ackerson, Ophiem, a stepson, Brad (Angie) Taflinger, Alpha, step grandchildren, Chelsi Cleary, Dixon, Michael (Ashley) Ackerson, Woodhull, Justin, Jimmy, and Katie Ackerson, all of Ophiem, Cami, Braden, and Jake Taflinger, all of Alpha, and step great grandchildren, Alaina and Ein Ackerson, Woodhull. Her parents, two infant brothers, and a brother, Cpl. John C. Townsend, USMC, preceded her in death.
