Richard L. Gustafson, 71, formerly of Cambridge, died Friday, August 10, 2018, at Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo. His body has been bequeathed to the Deeded Body Program of the University of Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 24th, at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremation Services. Rev. Randall Mullin will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family requests that everyone in attendance wear Chicago Cubs apparel if possible. His cremains will be interred in the Andover Township Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Cambridge Lutheran Church, Hillcrest Home for their Activity/Rehab Addition, or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Richard Lee Gustafson was born March 10, 1947 in Geneseo, the son of Donald and Virginia Paxton Gustafson. He was educated in Cambridge schools. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1965 where he was active in band, chorus, football, and track. He joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1964 and served on active duty from 1966 to 1969. He was a crew chief with the 31st Squadron AARS at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines for two years during the Vietnam War. His marriage to Norma Phillips took place in 1965.
He received his Associate Degree from Blackhawk College. In 1973, he married Julie McDonough. Rick worked for Case Manufacturing in Rock Island for nearly ten years, then he served as a Henry County Deputy Sheriff until his Multiple Sclerosis, diagnosed in 1985, prevented him from continuing in that position.
Those surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Brent Toft, Hayward, Wisconsin, two grandsons, Peter Milo, Hudson, Florida, and Joseph Milo, Las Vegas, Nevada, and several cousins. His parents, a son, Sean, and two brothers, Jerry and John, preceded him in death.
