Oscar W. Carlson, Jr., 82, of Silvis, died on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at University of Iowa Hospitals. Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2nd, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Cambridge. Father Peter Zorjan will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Cambridge. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, with a prayer service at 10:30.
Memorials may be made to the Oscar Carlson Memorial Fund.
Oscar William Carlson, Jr. was born October 22, 1938 in Kewanee, the son of Oscar W., Sr. and Leona VanDeWeghe Carlson. He was educated in Cambridge schools and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1956. He attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport and then graduated from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in February of 1961 with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He then attended Officer Candidate School for the United States Navy from February 1961 to July 1964. He was a full Lieutenant when leaving the Navy. Oscar had been home ported out of Newport during active duty and had several cruises to Europe and the Caribbean. He worked at Stanley Consultants in Muscatine, Iowa from 1964 to 1987. Oscar then worked in Charlotte, North Carolina for the C.T. Main Company for three years. In 1990, he transferred to the Cincinnati, Ohio office of R. M. Parsons Company, retiring in 1998 and returning to the Quad City area he loved. It was here that he met and married his "soul mate", Margaret "Peggy" Schmid, on October 12, 2001.
Oscar is survived by his wife, Peggy, as well as many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. His parents, a sister, Nancy, and a brother, Richard, preceded him in death.
