Niel P. Hewitt, 76, of Sheffield, died on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at his home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 6th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sheffield. Father Jeffrey Stirniman will officiate. Private burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Sheffield. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremation Services, 339 E. Chestnut St. Sheffield with a Rosary to be recited at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sheffield Public Library, Sheffield Historical Society, or American Cancer Society.
Niel was born February 10, 1940 in Kewanee, IL the son of Kennison W. and Blanche E. (Vermeulen) Hewitt. He graduated from Sheffield Community Consolidated High School in 1958. He attended Southern Illinois University, but unfortunately, a tragic automobile accident prevented him from continuing his education.
Niel always had a smile on his face for everyone and he enjoyed life to the fullest. He was an excellent maintenance worker and served as an ecumenist minister in St. Patrick’s Church in Sheffield, Illinois for many years where he was a member. He was difficult to beat in cribbage and played an excellent game of bowling. In High School Niel lettered all four years in football, basketball and track. He enjoyed sports and was an avid Chicago White Sox and Green Bay Packer’s fan.
Niel is survived by his mother, Blanche E. Hewitt, Sheffield Illinois; brother Conrad W. Hewitt and his wife Linda, Napa, California; sister Helen C. Hewitt, Brea, California. Also, Niel is survived by his nephews and nieces, Michael C. Hewitt, Huntington Beach, California; William D. Hewitt and his wife, Shelley, Bellevue, Washington; Mary Hewitt and her Fiancée, Steven Doolittle, Marina Del Rey, California; Donald L. Hewitt and his wife Frances, Pleasanton, California. Great nieces and nephews, Conrad K. Hewitt, Alexandra, Macallan, and Delaney Hewitt. Also, Niel is survived by his cousins; Jim and Willie Hewitt, Sterling, Illinois; Mary Jo Rosenow, Sheffield, Illinois and Tim and Robin Hewitt, Sheffield, Illinois, Marcia Hodgson, Libertyville, IL and Michael Wiley, Cape Canaveral, FL; and special friends, Terri Skiles and Justin Skiles, Sheffield. He was preceded in death by his father Kennison W. Hewitt and a sister-in-law, Shirley Hewitt.
