Marvin Verscheure

Marvin M. Verscheure, 86, of rural Cambridge, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at Allure of Geneseo. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 2nd, at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremation Services.  Vernon Stackhouse will officiate.  Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, with military honors by the Moline American Legion Post 246.  Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the Cambridge Fire Department or the Cambridge Ambulance Service.

Marvin Maurice Verscheure was born June 21, 1934 in Riley Township, St. Clair County, Michigan, the son of Maurice and Ethel Eineder Verscheure.  He was educated in Moline schools and graduated from Moline High School in 1954.  He served in the U.S. Army from January 1957 until November 1958, and was stationed in Korea for a year during that time.  His marriage to Mary Hicks took place on June 1, 1957 at Fort Chaffee Army Base in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  After his return from Korea, he served in the Army reserves until 1963.

He worked as a tool grinder at John Deere Spreader Works for ten years.  Marv purchased Morrey's Used Auto Parts in Cambridge from his father in 1972.  He operated that business until retiring in 1999, but he continued with his wrecker service for several years after that.  He was a member of the Geneseo Moose Lodge No. 990, and had been a charter member of the former Cambridge Area Chamber of Commerce.

Marv sponsored stock cars and demolition derby cars for many years.  In 1999, he was honored as a Friend of the Henry County Fair, and in 2015 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Quad City Speedway.  He donated auto body parts to the Carl Sandburg College body shop program and to the program at Black Hawk College, East Campus.  Marv also sponsored a bowling team for many years at the Cambridge Community Lanes.  He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.

Those surviving are his wife, Mary, his children and spouses, Kathy (Boyd) Johnson, Cambridge, Matt (Paul Eide) Verscheure, Santa Rosa, CA, Josh (Angela) Verscheure, Geneseo, two grandsons, Jake Johnson, Cambridge, and Mason Verscheure, Geneseo.  Other survivors include sisters, Helen Burleson, Moline, Shirley Ruhl, Cambridge, a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Janet Verscheure, Geneseo, sisters-in-law, Jean (Joe) Gottman, Taylor, MO, and Carol Hicks, Rock Island.  His parents, a sister, Diane Fleming, brothers, Charles "Bud" and Johnny Verscheure, and an infant brother, Bobby Verscheure, preceded him in death.
