Harley Barton

Harley B. Barton, 97, of Sheffield died at his home on Monday, October 14, 2019.  Funeral services will be held on October 29 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sheffield United Methodist Church.  Pastor Terry Lancaster will officiate.  Burial will be in the Sheffield Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on October 28 at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremation Services, Sheffield with a Masonic service taking place at 7 p.m.  Memorials may be made to Sheffield United Methodist Church, Sheffield-Mineral Rescue Unit, or Sheffield Historical Society.

Harley Burdette Barton was born September 15, 1922, in rural Sheffield, the son of Harry L. and Julia H. (Olsen) Barton.  He graduated from Sheffield High School.  On Feb 22, 1948, he married Yvonne Stevenson in Sheffield.  She died on January 22, 2007.  Harley had farmed all of his life in the Sheffield area until retiring.  He also drove a school bus for Western School District and later Bureau Valley School District.  Harley served as an EMT with Sheffield Rescue Unit for many years.

Memberships include the Sheffield United Methodist Church, Sheffield Lions Club, Manlius Sportsman’s Club, the Masons, and he had served on the Sheffield Village Board for a number of years.  Harley was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying for many years.  Other hobbies he enjoyed were bowling, golfing in later years, and dancing.

Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline (fiancé, Jack May) Neahring, Princeton, and Wendy (Mike) Melhouse, Kewanee; two sons, Stephen (Julie Thurwanger) Barton, Sheffield, and Gail (Janelle) Barton, Wyanet; nine grandchildren, Paula, Mike, Stephen Jr., Catrina, Nicole, Melissa, Ashley, Taylor, and Brandon; four step grandchildren, Ashley, Amber, Aricka, and Amanda; and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.  Other survivors include a brother, Harry “Babe” (Beverly) Barton, Sheffield, and brother-in-law, Kenny Riggs, Sheffield.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters, Lois Smith and Gladys Riggs; a brother, Kenneth Barton; and infant brother and sister, Raymond and Shirley.
