Gladys M. Peterson, 94, of Geneseo IL died peacefully on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Hammond Henry Hospital, Geneseo. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 6 th at First United Methodist Church, Geneseo. Rev. Dr. Christopher Ritter will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, 225 E. Park St. Geneseo. Memorials may be made to Henry County Humane Society, Geneseo or First United Methodist Church, Geneseo.
Gladys Peterson was born and raised August 9, 1920 in rural Geneseo, Illinois, the daughter of Floyd and Pearl (Nelson) Hines. In 1938 she graduated from Geneseo High School. She married Lester Peterson on February 21, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri. He died June 26, 1997.
Mrs. Peterson was first and foremost a farmer’s wife, homemaker and mother, but worked as a cook for Good Samaritan Center, Geneseo when it first opened until her retirement in 1978.
Gladys was a member of First United Methodist Church, Geneseo, UMW, TOPS, Birthday Bunch, and enjoyed volunteering at the church. She mostly enjoyed time with her family and grandchildren. She was a strong, hard working, witty, kind, humble, faithful, loving, and family centered woman who made the best apple pies around. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her as she left an impact on so many lives.
She is survived by her sons and daughters, daughters-in-law and daughters and sons-in-law: Roger (Berri) Peterson, Geneseo, Janice (Jack) Ebright, Grosse Pointe Park, MI, Richard (Jeanette) Peterson, Gatlinburg, TN, and Wanda (Chris) Owen, West Lafayette, IN; grandchildren, Barry (Angela) Peterson, McKinney, TX, Todd (Amber) Peterson, Geneseo, IL, Robin (Marcus) Ebright Zehr, Goshen, IN, Amy (Kevin) Ebright McKeehan, Batavia, IL, Jonathan (Ana) Ebright, Mt. Clemens, MI, Matthew (Steph) Ebright, Ypsilanti, MI, Chelsea (Chris) Peterson Heckman, Gatlinburg, TN, Tara (Brad ) Owen Needler, West Lafayette, IN, and Grant, Dulus, and Elena Owen, West Lafayette, IN.
She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, a great, great granddaughter, as well as 6 step grandchildren, 11 step great grandchildren and 9 step great, great grandchildren from AR, IL, GA, MO, NY, SD, and TX.
She is also survived by her 101 year old sister, Viola Lehman of Austin, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Dorothy Workman, and brother, Herbert Hines.
