Gladys Carlson

Gladys Matilda Amelia Carlson, 95, formerly of Cambridge, passed away Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010 at Hillcrest Home, which had been her home for the past 6 1/2 years. Services will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 17th at Augustana Lutheran Church, Andover. Rev. Jan Veseth will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Cambridge. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until 1 pm at the church. Memorials may be made to Augustana Lutheran Church or Hillcrest Home. Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Cambridge is assisting the family with arrangements.

Gladys was born April 9, 1915 on the family farm in Osco Township, the daughter of J. Albert and Anna Peterson Johnson. She attended school in Osco until the third grade, at which time she moved to Cambridge with her parents. She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1933, and then went on to graduate from Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois, in 1938.

Gladys taught high school for several years in East Peoria, Illinois. She then married Leslie Carlson in May of 1946. They lived on the family farm, where she was born near Osco, Illinois for five years, and then moved to Cambridge.

She was very active in the Augustana Lutheran Church, Andover, serving in many capacities. She was also active in the Andover American Legion Auxiliary and was a charter member of the Andover Historical Society.

Survivors include her three children: Nancy Carlson, Iowa City, Iowa; James (Lanette) Carlson, Cambridge, IL; David (Cheryl) Carlson, Cambridge. There are three grandchildren: Angela Carlson Valley, Wheaton, IL; Alissa Carlson, Bakersfield, CA; Blaine Carlson, Osco, IL; step grandchildren: Paul Miller and Mike Miller; four great-grandchildren, Mikayla Carlson, Caiden Carlson, Lauren Valley and Ian Valley and four step great grandchildren, Katie, Jacob, Cody and Rachel Miller. Preceding her in death were her parents and husband.
