George W. Clary, 1SG (Ret.), 73, of Coal Valley, died December 9, 2017, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf. There will be a visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 12th, at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremation Services. Committal services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Rock Island National Cemetery on Arsenal Island with full military honors. Those wishing to attend should meet in the parking lot at 17th Street and River Drive in Moline by 10:45. Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Society - Services at Home, Bettendorf.
George William Clary was born June 13, 1944 in McCook, Nebraska, the son of Charles H. and Martha H. Clamp Clary. He was educated in McCook schools and attended Black Hawk College in Moline and the El Paso (TX) Community College. His marriage to Carole Barnett took place on June 3, 1963 in McCook. He later married Diane Robinson Rathjen on May 26, 1989 in Moline. She passed away June 17, 2016.
He served in the U. S. Army for 22 years, retiring on June 30, 1991. He was then employed at the Rock Island Arsenal and retired from there on October 31, 2015. George loved bowling, going on cruises, and spending time with his family.
Those surviving are a stepson, Kent (Carol) Rathjen, a stepdaughter, Kelli (Greg) Whitesides, and grandsons, Damon and Dylan Nimrick, all of Coal Valley. Other survivors include a brother, Delbert (Lillie) Clary, Englewood, CO, sisters, Betty Sprenkle, Phoenix, AZ, Viola McBride, Colorado Springs, CO, Alice Marks, Culbertson, NE, and many nieces and nephews. His parents, his wife, Diane, a sister, Doris, who died at birth, and a daughter, Kimberly, preceded him in death.
