Eldon C. Atwell, 89, of Cambridge, died Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Kewanee Care Nursing Home. A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 6 th , at Rosedale Cemetery, Cambridge, with military services by the Cambridge American Legion. Dirk Wilkinson will officiate. There is no visitation. Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Cambridge, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Cambridge or the Cambridge Fire Protection District.
Eldon Clarence Atwell was born March 15, 1925 in Atkinson, the son of Clarence and Ida VanDeWoestyne Atwell. He was educated in Atkinson schools and graduated from Atkinson High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His marriage to Margaret Reilly took place on September 24, 1947 in Cambridge.
He was a lifelong farmer in Weller Township for 36 years before retiring and moving to Cambridge in 1990. Eldon was a 68 year member of the Cambridge American Legion Post 417 and a member of the Henry County Farm Bureau. His hobby was gardening, and he enjoyed delivering produce to neighbors, friends, and family.
Those surviving are his wife, Margaret, five sisters-in-law, Jane (Mit) Gilvin, Mary Reilly, and Shirley Robinson, all of Cambridge, Janet Reilly, Alhambra, California, and Joyce (Howard) Becker, Cambridge. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews including Diana Wilkinson and Bryan Underwood, both of Cambridge. His parents, a brother, and a sister preceded him in death
