Doug was proud to follow in his father’s footsteps (a Korean War Veteran) when he joined the United States Air Force. He dearly loved his country and was pleased to be able to serve four years in the Medical Corps at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. The military trained him to become a radiologist, which in turn led to his life’s craft of being able to help people in pain. He became a Nuclear Medicine Radiologist Technician, becoming the “chief tech” (boss and mentor to the many employees who passed through his department). He served at Trinity and Genesis Hospitals in the Quad Cities as well as working in the Peoria, IL medical community. The private sector also recruited his services. He served the public in this capacity for over 25 years.
There was an innate tenderness in Doug’s manner. His patients may not have realized (due to their stress) just how fortunate they were to have had him as a care provider. He was gentle and empathetic with all people. This included not only patients but also co-workers and other friends, family, and total strangers.
Even in his final hours he asked those gathered around him if “they were comfortable, did they need anything”, etc. When staff repositioned him in bed he would naturally cry out in pain. Incredibly, he would immediately apologize to them for his outburst!
He was the embodiment of his Christian faith – he loved the Lord. Anyone who knew him well can attest to the fact that he was kind, loving, generous…someone we will miss dearly.
Doug was an animal lover. He saved and cherished many dogs in his lifetime. He enjoyed the outdoors and for many years lived along the Rock River, below Blackhawk Road in Rock Island. Photography and playing guitar & organ were hobbies he enjoyed.
Doug is survived by his mother; sister, Jody; surrogate father, Bill; surrogate brother, Barry; aunts, Phyllis and Marian; as well as cousins and other extended family. His beloved dogs also survive him, Bailey & Grimm. Also, his feathered friend, Bosco.
Doug is preceded in death by his father/hero, Don; brother-in-law, Jim Cupp; and many, many grateful pets.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff members of Trinity West Hospital (Franciscan), Hope Creek Care Center and Hospice Care for their efficient, kind, and courteous vigilance in a time of pain, suffering, and sorrow.
