Donald Schuster

June 16, 1928 — December 23, 2016

Donald C. Schuster, 88, of Sun City Center, Florida, formerly of  Galva, passed away Friday, December 23, 2016 in Sun City Center.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017, at the Galva Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremation Services.  Rev. Robin Faull will officiate.  There will be a Masonic Service at 9:30 a.m. and visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. both on Saturday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in the Galva Cemetery with military services by the Galva Fusiliers.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Galva Senior Citizens, the Galva Historical Society, or the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Donald Carl Schuster was born June 16, 1928 in La Crosse, WI, the son of Albert and Mollie (Meier) Schuster.  He was a 1947 graduate of Bangor High School in Bangor, WI.  He graduated in 1948 from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, MO.  Don served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  His marriage to Helen Day took place on September 30, 1952 in Aurora, IL.  She survives.

He was the owner and operator of three funeral homes located in Algonquin, Galva, and Williamsfield, IL, retiring in 1989.  Don was active in the Illinois Funeral Directors Association in Springfield for many years and was recognized for more than 60 years of service as a funeral director.  He was a member of the Galva Lodge #243, AF & AM for over 65 years and the Mohammed Shrine in Bartonville, IL for 55 years.  Don was a former member of the First Congregational Church and a member of the Hagberg-Hamlin American Legion Post No. 45, both in Galva.

He moved to Sun City Center in 1993 and worked part time as a licensed funeral director for Lewers Funeral Home in Ruskin, FL for 14 years.  Don was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sun City Center and served on the Sun City Center Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for four years and volunteered his time at the Chamber and Sun City Center Community for many years thereafter.

Those surviving are his wife of 64 years, Helen, two daughters, Laura Gilbert, Roseville, MN, and Carol (John) Rada, Schaumburg, IL, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, loving niece, Ann Schantz, and many nieces and nephews.  His parents, two brothers, and two sisters preceded him in death.
