Barbara J Genster

Barbara J. Genster, 91, of Sheffield, was born October 8, 1931 in Chicago, IL. She died on August 29, 2023 in Geneseo. She was the daughter of Leo and Juanita Brolley. Barb married John W. (Jack) Genster on June 27, 1953 in Princeton, IL.  She is survived by four children: Tim Genster, Horseshoe Bay, TX, Mary Ann (Rick) Cernovich, Sheffield, IL, Patty Genster, Cleburne, TX, and Carol (Kelley) Wilson of Austin, TX. Also, 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.  She is survived by her sister Mary Ann McLain of Geneseo. Her husband, parents, and one brother preceded her in death.

Barb was raised in Chicago but later moved to Princeton, IL where she graduated from Princeton High School in 1949. She graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Peoria, in 1952.

Barb had a career working as a nurse in many areas from obstetrics to Director of Nursing at Prairie View Home.  Barb was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sheffield, and a faithful prayer warrior. Going to church and setting a life example for her family was her greatest joy. She enjoyed helping her husband with pro-life initiatives. She was a loyal fan of Notre Dame football. Later in life, she joined a women’s book club and enjoyed time with friends. Barb always welcomed visits and storytelling with her family and friends

Barb was lovingly called multiple names from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Nana, Nooner and Barbie Doll. Her family will miss her famous jello dishes, coffee talk, and competitive card playing.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of WoodRidge Supportive Care Home in Geneseo, IL and the In-Home Care Connection Hospice Staff for making our Mom comfortable in her last days. Have peace and joy in heaven Mom. We love you so much.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11a.m. on September 6^th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sheffield. Fr. Mark Miller will officiate. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Sheffield.  Visitation will be held 9:30-11a.m. at St. Patrick’s church. Rosary will be recited at 9 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials donations may be given to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sheffield.
