Harry H. “Babe” Barton, 92, of Sheffield died on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, IA. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13th at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremation Services, Sheffield. Rev. Terry Lancaster will officiate. Burial will be in Sheffield Cemetery, Sheffield. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sheffield United Methodist Church, Sheffield-Mineral Rescue Unit, or Sheffield Historical Society.
Harry was born May 19, 1930, near Sheffield the son of Harry L. and (Julia) Olsen Barton. He attended Sheffield Schools and completed his GED. He married Beverly Thompson on Oct 18, 1951, in the Buda United Methodist Church, Buda. Harry was drafted into the Army in Jan. 1952 and served until Jan. 1954, spending 18 months of the 2 years stationed near Munich Germany. He farmed in the Ohio, IL, Manlius, and Sheffield areas until retiring in 2001. Harry had also been a substitute bus driver for Western and Bureau Valley School Districts.
Harry was a lifelong member of Sheffield United Methodist Church, where he had served on many committees. His grandfather, Peter Olsen had helped build the Danish Lutheran Church and Harry served on the board of the Historic Church. He was also a member of Sheffield American Legion as well as a driver for the Sheffield Rescue Unit. Harry had a lifelong love of sports and before his marriage, he was a pitcher for a local Sheffield Baseball Team.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly of almost 71 years; two daughters, Diane (David) Girdler, Rio, and Denise (Gaile)Arnold, Buda; a son, David (Gail) Barton, Appleton, WI; six grandchildren, Ben (Janet) Nicholas, Michael (Tracy) Nicholas, Julia (Ronnie) Proctor, Josh (Kate) Arnold, Aleisha Barton (Nate Kleist) and Aaron Barton (Clare Hartjes); 13 great-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; 2 great great grandsons; 1 great great granddaughter; and 2 step great great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Kenneth and Harley Barton; two sisters, Lois Smith, and Gladys (Susie) Riggs; infant brother and sister, Raymond and Shirley; and a great-granddaughter, Carly Nicholas.
