CLARENDON HILLS — Norma J. Berfield, 93, formerly of Sheffield, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, at Hinsdale Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born April 26, 1925, in Wyoming, Ill., to Clinton Artemus and Katie Scott Dixon. She was raised in Wyoming and graduated from Wyoming High School. She married Charles M. Berfield of Toulon on Dec. 29, 1945.
The early years of their marriage were spent in Hawaii and Texas. In the early 1950’s, they settled in Sheffield, where they raised four children and ran a medical practice. Norma's career as an administrative assistant spanned many decades. She worked at Jostens in Princeton and Paxall in Chicago. Norma was an integral part in the formation, launch and management of the Wentcher Foundation, where she worked until the age of 90. Ernie Wentcher was blessed to have Norma as his executive assistant for 22 years and, more importantly, his friend. Norma’s talented and conscientious management of Ernie’s business and financial ventures gave Ernie confidence and peace. Norma faced adversity in a calm and dignified manner. She was blessed with excellent health and a sharp mind all of her life.
Surviving are three children, Margo Maurer of Clarendon Hills, Scott (Mary) Berfield of Woodinville, Wash., and Brian (Tanya) Berfield of Milton, Ga.; four grandchildren, Nathan (Jen) Maurer of Woodridge, Benjamin E. Berfield of Chattanooga, Tenn., Marisa Ann Berfield of Roswell, Ga., and Katherine Frances Berfield of Seattle, Wash.; one niece, Karen (Wayne) Wallace of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two nephews, Kent (Melody) Stafford of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Kevin (Marian) Stafford of Cocoa Beach, Fla.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Shirley; and a son, Brent.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27th at Sheffield Cemetery, Sheffield, IL. Rev. Martin Nussbaum will officiate. The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Wentcher Foundation, wentcherfoundation.org. Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.
