Gerald D. Nelson, 88, of Galva, died Thursday, December 13, 2018, at Hillcrest Home, rural Geneseo. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 17th, at the Galva Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremation Services. Rev. Randall Swanson will officiate. Burial will be in the Galva Cemetery with military services by the Galva Fusiliers. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Veterans Honor Flight or the American Legion Post No. 45.
Gerald Dennis Nelson was born April 19, 1930 in Cambridge Township, the son of Lawrence L. and Vernice L. Lindstrum Nelson. He was educated in rural Henry County schools and graduated from Galva High School in 1948. His marriage to Dorothy I. Boostrom took place on January 14, 1951 in Galva. Gerald served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a carpenter and a farmer in the Galva-Bishop Hill area for many years. His memberships include the Messiah Lutheran Church, Galva, and the Hagberg-Hamlin American Legion Post No. 45 of Galva. Gerald enjoyed watching Galva sports, especially when his grandchildren were playing, and he was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Bears, and Bulls.
Those surviving are his wife, Dorothy, a daughter and son-in-law, Teri and Rich Volkert, Galva, a son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Kathy Nelson, Trempealeau, WI, a daughter-in-law, Dawn Nelson, Sparta, WI, five grandchildren, Bilan (Chad) Hockers, Skylar Nelson, Mitchell Nelson, Kyle (Melissa) Volkert, and Kelly (Matt) Fargher, three step grandchildren, Jeff (Jessica) McCabe, Tom (Melissa) McCabe, and Marc (Jamie) McCabe. Other survivors include five great grandchildren, six step great grandchildren, and a brother, Lewis (Marian) Nelson, Bishop Hill. His parents, a son, Tom, two great grandsons, Noah and Liam Hockers, a sister, Lois Anderson, and a brother, Jim Nelson preceded him in death.
