Leo L. Johnson , 88, formerly of Cambridge, died Saturday, December 16, 2017, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 20th, at the Cambridge Lutheran Church. Rev. Randall Swanson will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Cambridge, with military honors. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral & Cremations Services. Memorials may be made to the Cambridge Lutheran Church.
Leo LaVerne Johnson was born March 2, 1929 in Andover Township, the son of Herman A. and Hazel T. Wildermuth Johnson. He was educated in Cambridge area school and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1947. He attended Black Hawk College, East Campus, in Kewanee. Leo joined the Iowa National Guard in 1948 and served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War era. His marriage to Elizabeth J. Durham took place on August 23, 1958 in Rock Island.
He was a farmer in Andover Township until retiring in 1983. Leo then worked at the Osco Fertilizer business from 1983 until 1988. He was an "Onion King" concession worker for several years, starting in 1987 and also worked at the Henry County Clerk's office in the Elections Department from 1989 until 1999. He moved to Cambridge in 1991.
His memberships included the County Center Grange #1862 and the Henry-Pomona Grange #84, both of which he joined in 1971. Leo was a Webelos Leader and Cubmaster from 1970 to 1980 for Cambridge Cub Scout Pack 135. He was a lifetime member of the Cambridge Lutheran Church, serving two terms on the Church Council, 23 years as Sunday School Superintendent, and 30 years as Pledge Secretary. He was a very active member of the church.
Those surviving are his wife, Betty, his children, Kevin L. (Lynn) Johnson, Davenport, Todd R. (Diane) Johnson, Cambridge, Jo Ellen (Eugene) Goodwin, Aurora, CO, Christopher J. (Becky) Johnson, Platte City, MO, and grandchildren, Chasity (Nick) Brown, Todd R. (Kaley) Johnson, Jr., Nicole (Nick) Catour, William Haff, Brandon Haff, Rebecca (Jon) Deyo, Dustin Goodwin, Eric Goodwin, Jessica Johnson, Courtney (Chance) Goodson, and Noah Johnson. Also surviving are 18 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, two brothers, Donald (Yvonne) Johnson, Cambridge, and Larry D. Johnson, Geneseo. His parents, a sister, Shirley Louise Johnson, an infant son, Adrian Anton Johnson, and a granddaughter, Amy Johnson, preceded him in death.
